Orthodontic Emergencies: Handling Braces and Aligner Problems

Most orthodontic issues, like a poking wire or loose bracket, are minor and can be managed comfortably at home until your orthodontist can help.

Common Orthodontic Issues

Braces and aligners occasionally cause problems between appointments. A wire may shift and poke the cheek, a bracket may come loose, an elastic tie may slip off, or a new aligner may feel sore for the first few days. Most of these are uncomfortable but not true emergencies.

Simple Steps for Relief

Orthodontic wax pressed over a sharp wire or bracket can protect your cheeks and lips. If a wire is poking, you may be able to gently guide it to a better position with the eraser end of a pencil. Avoid cutting wires yourself unless your orthodontist has advised it.

For general soreness, warm salt water rinses, soft foods, and over-the-counter pain relievers taken as directed can help. If a bracket comes loose, keep it if possible and bring it to your next appointment. For aligners, continue wearing your current tray unless instructed otherwise.

Who to Call

Contact your orthodontist about broken appliances, since they will want to adjust or repair them. If you are unsure whether a problem is urgent, or if you have tooth pain, an injury, or swelling, call our office at (561) 235-5424 and we will help you decide on the next step.

For major facial trauma, uncontrolled bleeding, severe swelling, or any trouble breathing or swallowing, go to the nearest emergency room or call 911 immediately.
