Why Regular Visits Matter
Many dental problems, including early cavities and gum disease, develop quietly without pain. Routine exams make it possible to identify these issues while they are small, which usually means simpler and more comfortable care. Most people benefit from visits about twice a year, though your dentist may suggest a different interval based on your needs.
The Professional Cleaning
Even with excellent home care, some plaque hardens into tartar, which cannot be removed with a toothbrush. During a cleaning, the hygienist carefully removes tartar above and just below the gumline, polishes the teeth to remove surface stains, and flosses between them. This helps reduce gum inflammation and keeps your mouth feeling fresh.
The Dental Exam
The dentist examines each tooth for decay and checks existing fillings and crowns. The gums are measured for signs of gum disease, and the bite and jaw joints are assessed. An oral cancer screening looks at the tongue, cheeks, throat, and other soft tissues. X-rays may be taken periodically to reveal what cannot be seen directly.
This is also a good time to mention any changes you have noticed, such as sensitivity, bleeding gums, or new medications.
