A Guide to Common Dental Procedures

From routine cleanings to fillings and root canals, here is a calm, plain-language overview of the treatments patients encounter most often.

Cleanings and Exams

Regular checkups combine a professional cleaning with a thorough exam. The hygienist removes plaque and hardened tartar, polishes the teeth, and the dentist checks for decay, gum disease, and other changes. X-rays are taken as needed to see between teeth and below the gumline.

Fillings and Sealants

When a cavity forms, the decayed portion of the tooth is removed and the space is filled, most often with tooth-colored composite resin that is bonded to the tooth. Sealants are thin protective coatings painted onto the grooves of back teeth to help keep food and bacteria out, and they are commonly used for children and teens.

Root Canals, Crowns, and Extractions

If decay or injury reaches the pulp inside a tooth, root canal treatment removes the inflamed or infected tissue, cleans and seals the canals, and allows the tooth to be saved. A crown is often placed afterward to protect it. With modern anesthesia, many patients find the procedure feels similar to having a filling.

When a tooth cannot be saved, or when wisdom teeth are causing problems, extraction may be recommended. Your dentist will discuss replacement options if a missing tooth would affect your bite or smile.

Feeling Prepared

Understanding what a procedure involves can make any visit feel more comfortable. Never hesitate to ask questions about why a treatment is recommended, what alternatives exist, and what recovery will be like. A good dental team welcomes those conversations.
