Your Child's First Dental Appointment

A positive first visit sets the tone for a lifetime of healthy dental habits. Here is when to schedule it and how to help your child feel at ease.

When to Schedule

Leading dental and pediatric organizations recommend that children see a dentist by their first birthday or within six months of their first tooth appearing. An early visit lets us check that teeth are developing well and gives parents guidance before problems have a chance to start.

What Happens During the Visit

First visits are short, gentle, and relaxed. Very young children often sit in a parent's lap while we look at their teeth, gums, and bite, check for early signs of decay, and gently clean the teeth if appropriate.

We will also talk with you about brushing techniques, fluoride, teething, pacifier and thumb habits, and healthy snacks and drinks. It is a great time to ask any questions you have about your child's oral health.

Helping Your Child Feel Comfortable

Speak about the dentist in a calm, positive way, and avoid words that might sound scary. Reading a picture book about visiting the dentist or playing pretend can help children know what to expect.

Scheduling the appointment at a time when your child is usually rested and in a good mood can make a big difference. Our goal is for your child to leave feeling comfortable and even looking forward to the next visit.
