Nitrous Oxide: A Gentle Way to Relax in the Dental Chair

Often called laughing gas, nitrous oxide is a mild, fast-acting sedative that helps many patients feel calm and comfortable during dental care.

What Nitrous Oxide Is

Nitrous oxide is a colorless gas blended with oxygen and breathed in through a small, comfortable mask that rests over the nose. Within a few minutes, most people notice a light, relaxed feeling, sometimes with a pleasant warmth or tingling in the hands and feet.

You remain awake and aware throughout your visit. You can talk with Dr. McGuffie, follow instructions, and let us know how you feel at any point. Nitrous oxide does not replace local anesthetic; instead, it takes the edge off anxiety so the appointment feels easier.

Who May Benefit

Nitrous oxide can be helpful for people who feel nervous about dental visits, have a sensitive gag reflex, find it hard to sit still for longer procedures, or simply want a more relaxed experience. It is used for both adults and children.

It is not right for everyone. Certain respiratory conditions, early pregnancy, and some other health situations may make another approach a better choice, so we review your medical history carefully before recommending it.

During and After Your Visit

The level of nitrous oxide can be adjusted throughout treatment so you stay comfortable. When the procedure is finished, you breathe pure oxygen for several minutes, which helps clear the gas from your system.

Because the effects fade quickly, most adults are able to drive themselves home and return to their normal routine the same day. A light meal beforehand is often recommended, and we are always happy to answer questions so you know exactly what to expect.
