Dental Implants: A Foundation for Replacement Teeth

Implants replace the root of a missing tooth, creating a stable base for a crown, bridge, or denture that looks and functions much like a natural tooth.

What an Implant Is

A dental implant is a small post, usually made of titanium or zirconia, placed into the jawbone where a tooth root once was. Over time the bone bonds to the implant surface in a process called osseointegration, creating a secure anchor. A connector called an abutment then supports the visible restoration.

Benefits of Implants

Implants do not rely on neighboring teeth for support, so adjacent teeth do not need to be reshaped. Because they stimulate the jawbone much like a natural root, they can help preserve bone that might otherwise gradually shrink after tooth loss. Many people find implant-supported teeth feel stable and comfortable when eating and speaking.

The Treatment Journey

Treatment begins with a thorough evaluation, often including 3D imaging, to assess bone and plan placement. The implant is placed in a minor surgical procedure, followed by a healing period that typically lasts a few months. Some patients need bone grafting first to build adequate support. Once healing is complete, the final crown, bridge, or denture is attached.

Good general health, healthy gums, and adequate bone all contribute to success. Smoking and certain uncontrolled medical conditions can affect healing, so these are discussed during planning.

Long-Term Care

Implants cannot decay, but the gum and bone around them can become inflamed if plaque is allowed to build up. Daily brushing, cleaning around the implant, and regular professional checkups help keep it healthy for the long term.
